Volunteer Spotlight: Northampton Food Bank

Peter, one of the many brilliant volunteers who serve each week

Serving with Compassion at Restore Northampton

At Restore Northampton, our Food Bank and Hub are about far more than meeting practical needs, they are places where people are welcomed, relationships are built, and community is strengthened.

This month, we are delighted to spotlight Peter, a valued volunteer whose faithful service reflects the heart of what Restore is all about.

Ken, our Project Co-ordinator, explains what makes the team so special:

“What’s special about the food bank and Hub team is their commitment, the length of time that they’ve been here. Consistently coming back to volunteer. It is a reflection on Restore as an organisation and what it is like, as the volunteers enjoy doing it. Peter is a great example of that.”

Peter began volunteering after retiring, motivated by a desire to give something back:

“I had retired, and wanted to give back to the community.”

He quickly found himself part of a team he describes as:

“Compassionate, friendly and committed to helping the community through difficult times.”

For Peter, volunteering is not just about offering practical help, it’s about making a meaningful difference:

“Volunteering gives me the opportunity to serve and make an impact.”

He also recognises that many people who come to the Food Bank can feel isolated, which is why connection is just as important as provision:

“Often it is an isolated world for the people who come to the food bank, so it's not just about giving them a food parcel, it's about getting to know them, having a coffee with them, creating a sense of community.”

Peter values how Restore’s wider projects help build that sense of belonging across Northampton:

“Restore is a fabulous vehicle for creating community, because of their various projects that they do such as tackling food poverty, Growbaby, Family Nest, the Christmas giveaway and the fun days during the summer. The outreach is brilliant.”

And perhaps most tellingly, volunteering has become something deeply personal:

“For me, it’s a family away from home.”

We are incredibly grateful for Peter and for every volunteer who faithfully gives their time, energy and compassion. You help make Restore Northampton not just a service, but a true community.
