Surviving to Thriving - An impact Story

There are moments in life when starting over feels impossible. For Kira*, arriving in Northampton with her young daughter meant leaving behind an abusive relationship to a place where she had no local support network, was living in temporary accommodation, and faced the overwhelming task of rebuilding a life for herself and her child.

When Kira first came to us via our Family Nest project, she simply hoped to meet other parents and feel a little less alone. What she found was a community.

As relationships began to grow, our team recognised that she needed more than friendship. Over the years, we have been able to support her in many different ways, with food parcels from our on-site Food Bank here at Restore Northampton and baby essentials from our Growbaby project.

Together, staff and volunteers have helped Kira navigate important milestones, including applying for British citizenship, securing permanent housing, and accessing specialist support for her daughter, who has additional needs. When she was finally offered a permanent home, we were able to secure funding to help furnish it with essential household items and make the move possible.

The journey hasn't been easy. There have been many challenges, including periods where her daughter has required hospital treatment. During those difficult times, the staff from Family Nest continued to be there, visiting, providing practical support and reminding Kira that she wasn't facing these challenges on her own.

The woman who once arrived knowing no one in Northampton has now built friendships through and has become part of a caring community. Recently, when her daughter celebrated her birthday, Kira welcomed another mum she had met through Family Nest  into her home to celebrate together. It was a simple moment, but one that spoke volumes about how far she has come.

Today, she continues to advocate tirelessly for her daughter while building a brighter future for them both. There are still hurdles ahead, but she now faces them with the reassurance that she is not alone.

When asked what this support has meant to her, she simply said:

"You have all been like my angels in times of difficulties."

It's about helping people rediscover hope, build lasting relationships and find the confidence to move forward. Kira’s story is a powerful reminder that when a community comes alongside someone with compassion and consistency, lives really can be transformed.
